About Me
My name is Nimbus Menk (they/them/theirs), and I am a graduate student in atmospheric science at the University of Kansas. I got my undergraduate degree in atmospheric science at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. There I was involved with both the local AMS chapter and the UAH Profiling and Sounding Team for Operational and Research Meteorology, alongside student outreach through the AES Department Ambassador Program.
Ever since childhood in Etowah County, AL I have always been interested in meteorology and severe weather, an interest that became amplified in the wake of the 2011 Superoutbreak, an event I alongside many other Alabamians lived through. In high school I was unsure of what my career would look like, but after reading the book Isaac's Storm by Erik Larson I decided to follow my childhood dream and become an atmospheric scientist.
My current work focuses on cloud and precipitation physics, boundary layer meteorology, and severe convective meteorology. Generally I am interested in all things weather however. I am currently a Graduate Teaching Assistant for the KU Geography and Atmospheric Science Department, as an instructor for the Introductory Meteorology labs.
When I'm not working, I enjoy cooking (despite not being good at it), hiking, reading, gaming, hanging out with friends, and playing with my two dogs, Biscuit and Mollie. I also like taking pictures on my phone of weather and nature, and if applicable upload them to INaturalist.
